Application Instructions for Wood Protection

Water Based Wood Stains

Water based wood stains are fully transparent penetrating stains, designed to enhance the natural beauty of wood, without obscuring its texture. They are high performance stains, especially formulated for colouring and decorating interior furniture and woodwork, whilst allowing the grain and texture to show through.

Water based wood stains have true enriching qualities, are fast drying and cover to some degree the differences in colour between different types of wood species, present on a single piece of furniture. They are applied easily, smoothly and evenly and colour uniformly the wooden surface, without darkening the end grain. They have good fade resistant properties and are not affected by the application of polyurethane, nitrocellulose and water based undercoats or finishes.

Water based wood stains can be mixed with each other, enabling the professionals (architects, decorators, craftsmen, etc) to create their own colour combinations. They do not contain harmful substances and are environmentally friendly.

Application

Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free from dirt, oil, grease and resins. On bare wood sand thoroughly using successively finer grades of sand paper up to 220 grit, until the surface feels smooth to the touch.

On a properly sanded surface, apply by sponge, brush or spray one or more coatings of WATER BASED WOOD STAINS, depending on the desired colour. During application of the stain, always follow the direction of the grain.

Wipe off smoothly the excess stain by using a wide brush, clean lint free clothe or sponge and let the surface dry completely. After drying, usually 4-24 hours depending on the ambient temperature and relative humidity, apply 1-2 coatings of a clear solvent or water based undercoat (polyurethane, nitrocellulose, acrylic, etc). In winter time, allow 24 hours before the application of the undercoat.

ATTENTION !!!  When using Perhydrol with ammonia to whiten the wood grain, always clean the surface thoroughly prior to the application of the stain. If the wooden surface is not thoroughly cleaned, the colour of the wood stain will change drastically. All water based wood stains are diluted only with colourless No.300.

Always ensure a stable temperature during the application of the WATER BASED WOOD STAIN.

Useful instructions for the application of water based wood stains:

Due to the transparency of wood stains, the final colour obtained will be affected by the following factors:

  1. The natural colour of the timber specie.

The darker the timber is, the darker the stain will become.

  1. The absorbency of the timber specie.

Softer woods absorb more stain than hard woods. The more stain that is absorbed into the wood, the darker the finish will become.

  1. The amount of stain and the number of coatings applied.

The more stain that is applied, the darker the finish will become.

  1. The dilution of the stain.

More dilution provides less colour.

  1. The gloss level of the finishing varnish.

Different gloss levels in the finishing varnish provide different optical and aesthetical results.
